The stock used on the XM-3 Sniper rifle is made by McMillan USA. The model number is the A1-3 stock. When DARPA was requesting feedback from Snipers about the stocks used by their M40s, the general consensus was that the Snipers liked the square fore-end on the A4 stock used by the M40A3, however they were more familiar with, and therefore had a preference for the more traditional, hunting style grip of the A1 stock. In order to have the best of both worlds, DARPA contacted McMillan and asked them to mate the fore-end of their A3 stock, with the rear of their A1 stock. McMillan took this request as a base to form the new stock from, but tweaked the design even further.

The square fore-end was widened slightly compared to the A3 stock to give more room for the night vision rail, they rounded off the edges for a better feel in the hand, and included a finger groove for better control. The rear of the stock is largely unchanged compared to the A1, however the cheek section was raised as high as possible to give better cheek weld whilst still allowing the bolt to cycle and be removed. The stock was moulded in solid Olive Green as per the M40A3/5 stocks.

The stock was fitted with McMillans adjustable spacer system. The minimum Length of pull was set as 12.5” and the spacer system is finished with a recoil pad. The decision was made to have the Wichita sling swivels installed the same as was included on the M40A1 stock however the front swivel was moved rearward and a sling stud was installed for the attachment of a bipod. If backordered, pricing may have to be adjusted per the manufactures newest price sheet.
